The US 11 then runs past the center of Hagerstown, a regional town with 40,000 inhabitants and a small conurbation with 120,000 inhabitants. The road then heads north on Pennsylvania Avenue, past the airport, and then crosses the Pennsylvania border. The US 11 in Pennsylvania then continues toHarrisburg.

History

According to Citypopulationreview, US 11 was created in 1926. Earlier, in 1909, the bridge opened over the Potomac River on the West Virginia border. This was a toll bridge until 1958. The road itself was paved in 1921. In the late 1920s and early 1930s the road was widened and again in 1948. In 1958, the first section of Interstate 81 was opened parallel to US 11 between US 40 and the Pennsylvania border. In 1966, I-81 opened further south, including a bridge over the Potomac River, eliminating US 11’s through-passage importance.
