In Jezebel we love to analyze the changing rooms of the movies. Today I will speak of Into the Woods, the next Disney film who is going to enjoy a wonderful costumes, a modern version of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, which intertwines the plots of several stories. Costume designer Colleen Atwood He is responsible for signing each of the amazing creations that await us in this musical of Broadway led to the cinema.
This fun and emotional musical focuses on the classic stories of Cinderella, little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk y Rapunzel, all United by an original story that involves a Baker and his spouse, the desire of both form a family and their interaction with the witch who casts a curse on them.
Precisely for the characters of Baker and the Baker woman, which interpret James Corden and Emily Blunt, Atwood wanted that they seem a Victorian couple, but the designer took very careful so that they were not too stretched. The actress explains it perfectly: “it was necessary that the woman of the Baker had a slightly unkempt appearance. And Colleen not only did marvelous dresses but achieved that you are not apparent that she was pregnant during the filming. The funny thing is that I played a character who wanted desperately to have a child while I was pregnant”.
For costume designer Colleen Atwood, What won the Academy Award for Alice in Wonderland, Chicago and memoirs of a geisha, the opportunity to design the costumes for all these characters from various fairy tales was priceless. And the fact that Into the Woods It was Atwood’s fourth collaboration with director Rob Marshall, It was the icing on the cake: “I connected with Rob since we met and since then we have developed a set of fantastic work. Rob has been involved in the design process, but at the same time does not impose what it wants”.
Meryl Streep is the witch
The inspiration of all the designs of Atwood for this production and many of the characters costumes included somehow the texture of wood. For example, costume witch who takes Meryl Streep, It is made with tiny pieces of leather that is stitched gauze and then combined with leather that looked like a cracked bark. Then, these pieces were mounted network to facilitate the movements of your character.
When you work with an actress like Meryl, what you’re doing is to collaborate with what will make wearing this costume. The movement is part of her character, and she knew from the beginning that the witch would be squatting, in a posture that was almost like a spider.
“When the witch turns into a film, I picked up the same theme and pulí it a little with satin and the finest fabrics. I exaggerated shoulders, gave him more volume and did it in a different color,”explains the designer. Speaking of the work Atwood, Streep says that: “Colleen is a tornado.” His work is very imaginative, and dramatic, and at the same time, it is well known for its attention to detail. His work is very thought out and is also beautiful and delicate”.
We had to create an entirely original fairy tale world so it was decided that the film not referred to any age in particular. Everything is related to the natural world of the Earth and the forest, and the result is a verand theaborate work as you can see in the pictures.
Regard to its makeup, the two looks of Meryl Streep created them J. Roy Helland, make-up artist and stylist of the actress from long ago, and that an Oscar won the best make-up of Streep in the iron lady. At the beginning of the story the witch takes a prosthesis on the forehead and Chin, and also a few crooked false teeth. For the transformation that suffers the witch at the end, Streep wears its natural beauty with streaked hair turquoise and silver and white immaculately white, almost like a blue fairy.
Anna Kendrick is Cinderella and Chris Pine Prince
Atwood was inspired in different places and times, and was based on people from the beginning of the last century for the creation of Cenicinta dresses. Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) and the Prince of Cinderella (Chris Pine) they are what she calls “new romantic”. His costume is beautiful, with lots of detail. Creations of time but with modern touches and bordering on Couture.
When the public sees for the first time to Cinderella, the young man converted into MOP has tangled dirty hair and is covered in soot. To appear more careful when he goes to the Palace to meet with Prince, the filmmakers imagined Kendrick with a verand theegant high bun, but soon realized there was too elaborate for her. “After seeing a first interpretation of Anna Thomas decided that her look was the most simple and modern as possible”, says make-up artist Swords King (winner of an Oscar for the Lord of the Rings: the return of the King). So they were limited to pick up her hair in a high ponytail and put a small tiara.
“It was perfect. It is the confirmation that ‘less is more’ does not fail ever”.
The Prince is endowed with a very majestic appearance. “Chris is so handsome that the only thing we did was to apply a few highlights to your hair, and with a wave in the front. In addition, his dazzling blue eyes and white teeth combined very well with a fledgling beard. A perfect blend of beauty and masculinity”.
For the stepsisters of Cinderella created elaborate models based primarily in the 1960s and in the 18th century.
Lilla Crawford is little Red Riding Hood
It’s a Sondheim musical with very modern music. It gives you a great freedom of action to play with all the outfits. For the character of Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Atwood was inspired by the parameters of the illustrations of the fairy tales of late years 30.
Johnny Depp is the Wolf
When it was time to create the look of the character of Johnny Depp, Wolf, the Muse of Atwood was the same actor. Depp is a big fan of Tex Avery, animator who created the famous character of the Wolf dress with a “zoot suit” (zoot suit costume consists of high-waisted or high-waisted, baggy pants and large wide-lapel jackets), based on the cartoon of MGM in the 1940s and 50 drawings. And I wanted to interpret their role dressed in this kind of costume, an idea I liked for directors.
“The idea of the Wolf is that you it’s the Wolf that imagine little Red Riding Hood. So we didn’t want to put Johnny a Wolf costume or a neck fur. Teach him an idea that was to embroider the pattern of skin on a piece of very fine wool that would later make the zoot suit as”.
The designer worked with an embroiderer to get a skin that was rasa, that moved and that was not too thick. For the tail and neck of the costume was inspired by an old wig of the 1920s. When it came time to create the designs for her hairstyle and makeup, the task fell to the expert hands of the personal make-up artist of Depp, Joel Harlow (The lone, Alice in the Wonderland). Harlow won an Oscar for his imaginative work in Star Trek and had previously turned Depp into the iconic Captain Jack Sparro four Pirates of the Caribbean movies as well as the Mad Hatter in Alice in the Wonderland.
To complete the look of the evil stalker of little Red Riding Hood, Harlow initially devised a piece complete prosthetic for Depp. But after making a series of camera tests, the look went on to suggest the appearance of a Wolf using lights and shadows. In the end result it takes short dark hair and also a large mustache and eyebrows populated. His hat has ears which gives it a very intriguing.
Rapunzel is MacKenzie Mauzy
For Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy) and the Prince of Rapunzel (Billy Magnussen), costume designer dared to give them a darker and more medieval air. In the words of Mauzy:
My clothes were all those strings that I almost held; They symbolize my life in the tower. But the most important is that when I put on the dress I felt like Rapunzel
To create the six meters braid, the production team brought Germany real blond hair. It is then hand knitted with a very strong cotton and a braid is formed with MacKenzie Mauzy hair. The producers came to suggest that be used acrylic hair, but Swords King was against the idea because he knew that he would shine too before the camera. Mauzy was passed all the shooting, as well as several weeks of pre-production, taking the braid as I wanted to be sure that it seemed that he had taken her life. “At the beginning it was very rare, but when I cut it off me di account which I had grown accustomed to take it.” It was not a wig, was like an enormous expansion which had interwoven with my hair and seemed really”.
Magnussen, who was dressed leather from the feet to the head agrees and says: “I wore leather pants and felt immediately that they fit with my character. I loved. Colleen’s work is fantastic. Add all those layers that give me clues and help me give life to my character”.
