The noise of engines and two tubs of cast iron on wheels roam the sands of the beach. One of them is a Ford 1934, throwing sand to the top after a blonde wearing a jumpsuit of the Harley-Davidson shake a checkered flag. From the stands, the spectators watch the Hot Rods, Harleys and Indians vintage side-by-side on a track about 200 meters long. Wheels spin, tyres kicked the sand, and exhausts clouding the sea. A gentleman in a suit yells the rules at the top of a tower to save lives, and to the side of the Ford fires a Duesenberg of 1921.The pilots tread on the bottom and the cars fly toward the finish line.
The The Race of Gentlemen (TROG) is a festival car that celebrates the history of the automobile race in the United States. This scene above happened in 2015 (and has been happening once per year since 2012) but it could have very well have happened in the decade of the 40’s and 50’s, when the hotrodders americans were doing drag races on the beaches of the east coast of the United States (for more on the history of hot rods, have the book , Birth of Hot Rodding. The event is a tribute to the history of the car and the motorcycle, where the spectators and riders are transported to a time more simple, when men were gentlemen and the cars reigned. The event is different from most of the festivals of cars and old bikes. In the TROG they put the engines to work and pre-selected participants compete in a drag race on the sands of New Jersey.
The photographer Allan Glanfield made a coverage of the race of vintage cars is very cool for the blog, The Selvedge Yard. The weather is perfect and the spectators gather to listen to good music, eat, drink, and see the antique fire across the sea:
The event value that would be correct in the decade of 30 and 40. Throughout the disclosure, structure, sponsors, and people are prepared to emulate all the details of the races of the beach of the season, and the most important thing about all this are the machines. Space is limited and participants are handpicked according to the authenticity of each! To participate in the TROG the interested parties need to sign up race cars americans with visual pre-1935, or bikes that are older than 1947.The appearance of the vehicle too much in the process of selection and therefore the customizations are not allowed to use anything modern, and the organization has the right to request a change in the vehicle to suit it to the spirit of the race. Nothing of the comfortable benches, is in the berry, with the essential for speed.
The TROG 2015 delayed a week because of a hurricane, but it seems to have been a success even with the threat of wind hovering in the air. The carnival took place in Wilwood, on the coast of New Jersey. The city is one of the birthplaces of Rock n Roll. It was there that Bill Haley and his comets presented for the first time the song “Rock Around the Clock“ that was not the first single rock n roll, but is considered to be the music that is responsible for bringing the sound to the mainstream culture. The beach town has a population of 5,000 people that increased to 250,000 in the summer. Is that the temprada heat behind an avalanche of tourists wanting to enjoy the hotels with dazzling neon signs and retro-looking, that also make a perfect environment for an event of this type. The window of time between the holidays of tourists and the weather is bad leaves the empty city with the perfect beach for the tires, as it was the Daytona in the 50’s or in Pendine Sands, Wales.
The few participants, the structure is simple and the women waving flags, make TROG a well old-fashioned, full of rusty steel and also a spirit of the amateur that disappeared from auto racing (in fact any sport) modern. The simplicity of the concept is enhanced by the enthusiasm and energy of the participants, all aligned with great attention to detail and despretenção stamped on the smile. The wide availability of products vintage authentic makes it easier, since the US have lived this culture when it actually happened, and I think that the Race of Gentlemen does an amazing job showing the culture of the car yesterday. Is that has a difference between nostalgia, kitsch and a tribute sincere, between the retro and forced a revival of the weighted. I am not part of the culture, and I am a mere observer who enjoys the life style, but I venture to say that these guys are for real. They are not trying to resurrect the hot rodding, they are a proof that this culture never died.
The official website of the event also has some more photos as well legal with panning freezing the cars in full action! You can access the gallery and also the page of photographer Mike Spock to see more.
