Colombia – conflicts
With 1.142 million square kilometers, Colombia is more than three times the size of Germany, but is home to just over half of the German population (47.7 million residents, as of 2012). Large parts of the country on the equator are difficult to access due to the natural spatial conditions (mountains), poorly developed and partly covered by dense tropical forests.

Unrest and conflict have been part of the history of Colombia since the early 19th century. Around the mid-1960s, a social revolutionary guerrilla formed in the impoverished rural areas and the slums of the big cities, and a little later, from the 1970s, the cultivation of cannabis and coca plants spread throughout the country. Since then, the cultivation areas have been fiercely contested between state armed forces, right-wing paramilitary groups and guerrilla organizations such as the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) and the ELN (Ejército de Liberación Nacional). After civil war-like clashes with massacres in the 1980s and 1990s, official negotiations between the Colombian government and the FARC have been ongoing since 2012 to resolve the conflict. which are accompanied by Norway, Chile, Cuba and Venezuela, but are under difficult circumstances. Since no ceasefire was initially agreed, there was further fighting despite the peace talks. At the end of 2014, the FARC finally declared a ceasefire.
