In 2011, the population of Barbados was estimated to be around 285,000 people, with a majority of the population being Christian. The economy of Barbados was largely supported by its tourism industry as well as its offshore banking sector. In terms of foreign relations, Barbados maintained diplomatic relations with over 80 countries and had embassies in various countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Jamaica. In terms of politics, Barbados had a parliamentary system with an executive branch headed by a Prime Minister who was appointed by the Governor-General after each general election. The legislative branch consisted of a bicameral parliament composed of the Senate and House of Assembly which were both elected by popular vote every five years. A $ 70 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) was secured for a commitment to renewable energy from, among other things. wind, water and biomass. Energy saving measures were also included in the plan, which aimed to reduce the large dependence on imported fossil fuels.
